** First up: In a report by Newsfile, the Canadian cannabis extractor Nextleaf Solutions has announced that the company has received a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for an ultrasonic cannabinoid extraction process using a non-flammable co-solvent.
“This technology has the potential to differentiate from the established extraction methods through the use of an innovative continuously-fed cannabinoid extraction system,” said Dr. David Novitski, co-author of Nextleaf’s 11th issued U.S. patent. “The ability to continuously extract THC from biomass is a gamechanger in the realm of extraction.”
In addition to the patent, Nextleaf has announced that the company has entered a Cannabis Extraction Services Agreement with a Canadian cannabis producer, which will provide cannabis biomass to Nextleaf to be processed into THC distillate.
** And next: PRNewswire reports that Khiron Life Sciences, a cannabis producer focused on the Latin American and European markets, has announced that it is the first company to begin exporting high THC medical cannabis from Colombia to Peru.

In September 2020, Khiron began selling CBD products in Peru. Khiron plans to begin filling its first medical cannabis prescription orders this month.
** Last up: In a report by PRNewswire, the Canadian cannabis company Canopy Growth has announced a slew of facility closures and employee layoffs.
Among the sites throughout Canada affected by the closures are: St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador; Fredericton, New Brunswick; Edmonton, Alberta; Bowmanville, Ontario; and outdoor cannabis operations in Saskatchewan. This will affect approximately 220 Canopy employees.
CEO David Klein cited a focus on profits when commenting on the closures and affected employees.
“These actions will be an important step towards achieving our targeted $150-$200M of cost savings and accelerating our path to profitability. We are confident that our remaining sites will be able to produce the quantity and quality of cannabis required to meet current and future demand,” said Klein, adding that he “thank[s]” the employees affected by the decision.
