This is an opinion cartoon. Alabama’s new medical marijuana law ain’t perfect. It’s got a lot of weird restrictions. And maybe a Vienna sausage-flavored suppository. But that’s OK. Weird flavors and baby steps in the right direction are better than being stuck in the mud. Gov. Kay Ivey signs Alabama’s medical marijuana billSorry, Alabama ladies. The clueless mostly dude lawmakers who are in charge just can’t help themselves. They made some interesting last-minute amendments to this bill. For instance: “Wimmen cain’t use it for their wimmen PMS stuff!”Medical marijuana plan passes: Alabama’s growing like a weedDudes. You had a chance to make life better for everyone. What were you thinking? As my daughter said, “Do they not know women live in this state?”Medical marijuana is a start. A baby-step start I didn’t think I’d ever see on my watch in this state. It’s another tool in the utility belt for doctors. It will help sick children. It will help dying people feel more comfortable in their final days. Compassion. It’s a good thing. It can be tweaked to be better. Ivey thanked the bill’s sponsors, Sen. Tim Melson, R-Florence, and Mike Ball, R-Madison, and called the bill an important first step.“This is certainly a sensitive and emotional issue and something that is continually being studied,” Ivey said. “On the state level, we have had a study group that has looked closely at this issue, and I am interested in the potential good medical cannabis can have for those with chronic illnesses or what it can do to improve the quality of life of those in their final days.”Alabama face mask dilemma: Who wants to be mistaken for a vaccinated liberal?
