Cannabis News: New York’s New Govorner is Ready to Roll Out Legalization

0

According to their administration, New York’s new recently inaugurated governor is dedicated to quickly staffing regulator roles in order to start the state’s cannabis legalization.

Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), who took over as governor last week after previous Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) resigned over sexual harassment allegations, was accepting of the state legislature’s approval of the recreation legalization measure this year. Whereas Cuomo was chastised while deliberations with legislators over prospective candidates languished, the current governor is taking the reins and taking meetings to discuss how to advance the procedure ahead.

Appointing members of the Cannabis Control Board and an executive director for the Office of Cannabis Management as a top priority will move the state nearer to establishing regulations and opening the consumer market. Adults 21 years or older can currently acquire a maximum of three ounces of cannabis or 24 grams of concentrates, and they can also consume cannabis in public wherever tobacco can be smoked, but no dispensaries have yet opened.

The reality that authorities in adjacent New Jersey just announced regulations for its recreational cannabis system, which is being enacted after voters passed a legalization initiative last year, is contributing to the urgency to get the New York sector operating.
