Dr. Zaghi -TBI – AAPMD: Ethical Principles in the Practice of Scientific Research and Public Policy
We continue to bear witness to the incredible advances of modern medicine year by year and almost day by day. Whether we agree or disagree with the current direction of scientific research and the public policy it informs, it could be enlightening to review the basic ethical principles which are intended to regulate scientific research as we know it today. This lecture is based on content and materials considered essential learning points for investigators and research teams of clinical research projects by most Institutional Review Boards. We review the principles of ethics, honesty, and integrity as well as the principles of informed consent, autonomy, and justice as it applies to the current accepted standard of clinical research. Controversial topics relating to today’s public policies are presented as a framework for improving communication and mutual understanding, compassion, and respect between both sides of health policy debate. Whereas modern medicine is credited by many with the near eradication of polio, smallpox, and mumps, among many other devastating infectious diseases, it is critically important to create space and understanding as to why some people may be reluctant or hesitant to accept certain treatments. To engage in constructive conversation between two diametrically opposed perspectives, it could be helpful to first recognize one’s own implicit bias, develop a thorough understanding for the opposition’s point of view, and create space and patience to listen, understand, and appreciate opinions and deep emotions before resorting to alternative options that could further perpetuate mistrust and alienation.
