Drugs bonfire: Nine-tonne haul of cocaine, cannabis and heroin set on fire in Panama

Police in Panama have set alight a nine-tonne haul of illegal drugs including cocaine, cannabis and heroin. The drugs, worth millions of dollars on the street, have been seized from traffickers trying to smuggle the drugs from Mexico and South America to the US. Deputy Commissioner for Judicial Investigation, Flavio Vergara, said most of the haul — around eight tonnes — was cocaine. “It’s the first burning we’ve had since January first to now. Up to today we’ve had about nine tonnes of drugs and it’s being decommissioned by security officials,” he said. “The main drug is cocaine, about eight tonnes, the rest is made up of marijuana and other drugs.” Panama is a tiny country in Central America, with a population of only around three and a half million. But its position linking North American with South America means drug trafficking is a huge problem. Last year alone, about 40 tonnes of drugs were seized and destroyed as they made their way through the country. Report by Charlotte Cross.
