Edibles 101: An Introduction to CBD or THC-Infused Edibles

0

Edibles are a VERY popular way of consuming cannabis and hemp products.

?EDIBLES SCIENCE ?

When inhaling cannabis through smoking or vaporizing, the cannabinoids hit your lungs and enter your bloodstream immediately. That’s why you feel the effects of a joint pretty quickly after taking a hit. The effects of inhaling cannabis can last anywhere from a few minutes to 2 hours.

When you consume an edible however, cannabinoids first pass through your digestive system and THEN enter your bloodstream. That means that there’s a bit of a delay before you’ll feel an Edibles’ effects.

?The 201 version: When you consume a THC edible, the liver metabolizes the THC and it chemically converts from Delta-9-THC into 11-OH -THC. 11-OH -THC passes the brain barrier more rapidly and is generally a more potent chemical compound which is why edibles tend to “hit harder” than other forms of ingestion.

The effects of your edible may take 30 minutes-2 hours to fully kick in and can last anywhere from 2 – 6 hrs. Experts recommend that you “start low and go slow” when consuming edibles. You can always take more but you cannot take less.

?PICKING THE RIGHT EDIBLE ?

?1. Feelings desired

First, You’ll need to decide what you want from your edible:
?Do you need help falling asleep?
?Are you looking for a buzz?
?Maybe you just feel some pain or stress.

What you feel when you take an edible is largely determined by cannabinoids. The two you’re most likely to see listed on your edibles package are THC and CBD but there are 100+ more!

Each of these causes different effects independently and when combined. You can learn more about these in my blog post and video on choosing the right cannabis product for you: https://www.cyntivee.com/edu/2018/how-to-choose-cbd-cannabis-product

?2. Dosing
Just like any other medicine, dosing is another huge factor in determining how you feel when you try edibles.

?A standard dose when taking THC products is 10 mgs.
?A standard CBD dosage ranges from 5-25 mgs.

If you are new to cannabis or are particularly sensitive, you may want to start with a fraction of a standard dose. These small doses are called micro-doses and typically clock in at 2-5 mgs. To get a micro-dose, You can break a standard dose piece OR you can purchase pre micro-dosed products on the market.

If you’re not getting the desired effects from your edibles, play with your dosing. You may have to go up. You may have to go down. We all react differently to cannabinoids and dosages and you may just have to tinker with it to figure out the right thing for you.

?3. Type of Edible
The days of pot brownies as the most popular edibles are long behind us and there are TONS of options on the market today. There is everything from cookies, chocolates, gummies, teas, to honey sticks and drinks.

?4. Product Quality
If you’re typically a consumer that considers ingredients or nutrition in your food purchases, look for edibles that live up to your standards! If you’re gluten-free, vegan, have allergies, there are options on the market for you. Take a good look at the packaging to understand what you’re eating.
