um just a little bit of your expertise
00:02
and share it with our community
00:04
i’m forever grateful for that
00:08
well thank you so much for having me and
00:11
allowing me to share
00:12
some of our work that’s brilliant and
00:16
just for
00:16
for people who might not know about the
00:18
aemon clinics um
00:20
about yourself um can you just give a
00:22
brief introduction
00:23
and how long you’ve been practicing how
00:25
long you’ve been treating
00:27
mental health conditions and just a
00:29
little brief explanation about the aim
00:32
and clinics
00:33
and everything that you do there so we
00:36
have
00:37
eight soon to be nine clinics across the
00:40
united states
00:41
we’ve been at this a long time been a
00:44
psychiatrist nearly 40 years
00:47
amen clinics has been around for 30
00:49
years
00:50
and we think you should actually look at
00:53
the brain
00:53
before you go about changing it
00:56
and so we do a study called brain spect
01:00
imaging we looks at blood flow and
01:03
activity
01:04
looks at how your brain works
01:07
and we’ve done 160 000
01:11
scans on people from 150 countries
01:15
so we have a lot of experience we see
01:17
little kids
01:18
and old people and everybody in between
01:22
we treat um all the letters from
01:26
add anxiety autism
01:29
uh bipolar disorder
01:32
uh schizophrenia ptsd
01:37
and do a lot of work with memory
01:40
and brain optimization and
01:44
you know i actually really hate the term
01:46
mental illness
01:47
i think it’s wrong it’s shaming
01:50
it’s stigmatizing when you call someone
01:53
mental
01:54
that’s not a good thing and
01:58
um our brain imaging work teaches us
02:00
that most psychiatric problems
02:03
are brain health issues that steal
02:06
people’s minds and what we discovered is
02:09
once you get your brain right
02:12
your mind tends to follow
02:15
and so i have a new book called the end
02:18
of mental
02:18
illness where i’m really trying to get
02:21
us to stop
02:22
using the term mental illness call
02:25
these things what they really are right
02:28
health issues
02:30
and in that way everybody will want help
02:33
no one wants to see a psychiatrist
02:35
because no one wants to be labeled as
02:37
defective
02:38
or abnormal but every one of the people
02:42
watching
02:42
wants a better brain so what if
02:46
mental health was brain health and then
02:50
what we do is just be much more
02:52
effective
02:53
at helping people who suffer so you’re
02:56
saying
02:57
um take away the term mental um out of
03:00
the equation
03:01
and change it to brain health i really
03:03
like the idea of that and i think what
03:05
you say
03:06
there is a stigma to mental mental
03:08
illness and
03:10
um a lot of people would say that
03:12
anxiety disorders
03:14
potentially don’t even fall into a
03:16
category of mental illness
03:18
almost because it’s a condition that can
03:20
be changed
03:23
yes but it clearly causes people to
03:26
suffer
03:26
yeah and it’s a condition that
03:30
if you don’t treat it can lead people
03:33
to drug and alcohol abuse it can lead
03:36
to loneliness and social isolation
03:40
and suicide and and it’s highly
03:44
treatable
03:45
but you know schizophrenia is treatable
03:47
bipolar disorder is treatable
03:50
depression is treatable i just think how
03:53
we name things in psychiatry is
03:55
a mess and mostly because
03:58
we never look at the underlying biology
04:02
and what other medical doctor acts like
04:05
that right that they don’t
04:06
look at the organ they treat
04:10
and clearly the brain is
04:13
responsible for most psychiatric
04:16
conditions and at aemon clinics we just
04:19
think you should look at it
04:21
and then we should treat it and
04:24
our first thought is not medication
04:27
i mean we use medicine when we think
04:29
it’s appropriate
