Hi, everyone! Welcome to At Home with House of Puff.
Today is a big day for cannabis.
That’s right, New York finally has legalization! And I feel like there should be some sort of ball dropping but my fancy headband will have to do.
So what does NY legalization mean for you? Five things you need to know.
#1 How much cannabis can you have?
Effective immediately, you can carry up to 3 ounces of cannabis or 24 grams of concentrates in your handbag. And you can store up to 5 pounds of cannabis at home. This is just ¼ ounce. So, needless, to say, 3 ounces is a LOT! Let alone 5 pounds.
#2 When and what can you legally buy?
Under NY legalization, you can only legally buy cannabis from licensed retailers. Those won’t launch until sometime in 2022, after the state gets all the regulatory apparatus set up for the industry.
BUT, NY is also expanding its limited medical marijuana program. More medical conditions will qualify. So check out the expanded list. When it goes live, we’ll link it below. You’ll also be able to get a 60-day supply, instead of just a 30-day supply. Two thumbs up!
Most importantly, for the first time, NY’s medical dispensaries will be able to sell flower. Grinding up some right now. That’s huge! Why? Because flower makes your cannabis budget go a lot further.
Third thing: where can you use cannabis?
So, under NY legalization, you can now consume cannabis just about anywhere—in your home, on the street—of course, just NOT when you’re driving. But, in 2022, there’ll be even licensed consumption lounges. So I can’t wait to see how chichi NYC gets with it because you know we will.
Ok, #4, can you grow cannabis at home?
It was in doubt for a long time, but I’m excited that NY legalization includes home grow. That’s right, I will be channeling my inner farmer with a cannabis garden of my own. And you can, too.
To get tips before you start, check out our home grow editorial on thedrawingroom.blog. We’ve got tips from one of the top Colorado craft growers, so you can really go gourmet with it. That’s gonna take a little bit of time, though, until the state sets up regulations for it. But, when they do, you can have up to 6 plants per adult with a max of 12 per household.
And before I light my celebratory Le Pipe, let’s talk about #5—what NY legalization is doing to right all the wrongs of the War on Drugs.
Being Puerto Rican, I couldn’t talk to you about legalization without speaking to its impact on communities of color. Of course, there’s always gonna be room for improvement.
But, very happily, NY legalization includes several provisions that look to reverse the awful toll that the War on Drugs has disproportionately taken, especially on Black and Latinx communities.
First, people with cannabis-related convictions that are now legal will have their records automatically expunged. Thank you, god!
Second, after admin costs, 40% of cannabis-related taxes will go to reinvestment in communities that were adversely affected by the War on Drugs. Another 40% will go to fund public schools, and the final 20% will fund drug treatment facilities and public education programs.
And on that note, I’m going to light my Le Pipe—a celebratory puff. There will be more work to do on it. That’s for sure. But, today, join me in a good long puff and celebrate. I know I am.
