Research into cannabinoids' anti-cancer potential in Britain
Across the world, Britain is regarded as a leading nation in scientific research and innovation, at the forefront of studies into the prevention and treatment of cancer.
However, institutes exploring the anti-cancer effects of cannabinoids – chemical compounds found in cannabis – are a minority.
Dr Wai Liu is one research scientist based in London, who has specialised in the study of cannabinoids for more than a decade.
His research has focused on two types of cannabinoids: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the main psychoactive compound in cannabis – and cannabidiol (CBD) – a non-psychoactive element of the plant.
Charlotte Foot visited Dr Liu at his laboratory at St George’s University of London to investigate.
