Doctors who haven’t prescribed medical cannabis should consider it. Firstly, patients want it. I’d be surprised if any GP would be able to say that they haven’t had a patient request it. Secondly, and critically, it works and it’s safe. There are more and more studies indicating clear benefit for certain conditions and while there are risks associated with cannabis use – more so with THC use than with CBD and other cannabinoids – with some diligence, awareness of contraindications, these risks can be severely reduced. There are too many potential indications to cover here but there are many options when it comes to learning more. A simple google search of Australian cannabis prescribing is a good start. If you’re a doc who has patients requesting medical cannabis and you’re still not comfortable prescribing, please consider referring to a cannabis prescribing clinic or doctor that you trust.
